Hanoi to Hai Phong by Train: Timetable, Stops and Fares

By Sumer. Checked against official sources on 2026-10-21. A few points are still open; they are listed under Sources.

The train is the slowest way between Hanoi and Hai Phong, but it is cheap, runs from the centre of both cities and crosses the Red River on the historic Long Bien bridge. We checked every departure below against the official Vietnam Railways timetable for 22 and 25 October 2026. Timetables change, so confirm your train on the official site before you travel.

Is the line running?

Yes. In early February 2026 trains were briefly stopped from crossing Long Bien bridge after structural damage was found, and Hanoi to Hai Phong trains picked up passengers at Gia Lam instead. State media reported that the bridge reopened to trains on the evening of 9 February 2026 and that the normal timetable through Hanoi station resumed from 10 February. The official timetable we checked in October 2026 again starts and ends at Hanoi station.

Trains from Hanoi to Hai Phong

On our check date the official timetable listed four departures from Hanoi station. HP1 leaves at 06:00 and arrives in Hai Phong at 08:25. LP3 leaves at 09:25 and arrives at 12:00. LP5 leaves at 15:15 and arrives at 18:00. LP7 leaves at 18:10 and arrives at 20:55. Journey times are between 2 hours 25 minutes and 2 hours 45 minutes, so HP1 is the quickest choice for a morning meeting in Hai Phong.

News reports from February said LP7 starts from Long Bien station on weekdays and from Hanoi station only at weekends and on holidays. The official timetable showed Hanoi station on our check date, so check the departure station on your ticket.

Trains from Hai Phong to Hanoi

In the other direction the official timetable listed LP2 at 06:05 arriving in Hanoi at 08:49, LP6 at 09:10 arriving at 11:52, LP8 at 15:00 arriving at 17:40 and HP2 at 18:40 arriving at 21:15. On Sunday 25 October an extra train, LP10, was also listed, leaving Hai Phong at 16:20 and arriving in Hanoi at 19:03. Press reports describe LP10 as a Sunday-only service, which suits weekend visitors returning to Hanoi.

Stops along the way

The line is 102 km long. HP1 stops at Gia Lam on the east bank of the Red River, then Hai Duong, Phu Thai and Thuong Ly before reaching Hai Phong station. Gia Lam is useful if you are staying in Long Bien district, and Thuong Ly is on the western edge of Hai Phong. Other trains may skip some stops, so check the stop list for your train number.

Fares

The official fare table for HP1 on our check date listed soft seats from 124,000 VND, with other soft-seat codes at 129,000, 154,000 and 309,000 VND. Vietnam Railways says fares include insurance and can vary with when you buy, the passenger type and the seat position in the carriage, so treat these as a guide and check the price when you book.

Booking and boarding

Book on the official Vietnam Railways site, dsvn.vn, or buy at the station ticket office. Booking sites run by resellers often add fees. Bring the passport you booked with, arrive at least 20 to 30 minutes early, and keep your ticket until you leave the destination station. Trains on this line are popular at weekends and around public holidays, when the railway sometimes adds extra services, so book ahead on those dates.
