Vietnam Public Holidays and Tet 2027: Official Dates and What Closes

By Sumer. Checked against official sources on 2026-10-22. A few points are still open; they are listed under Sources.

Tet, the Lunar New Year, is the one time of year when Vietnam really stops. Offices close for a week, trains and flights fill up weeks ahead, and many small shops shut for several days. This guide lists the public holidays set by the Labour Code, the Tet 2027 schedule the government has already announced, and what we could not confirm yet.

The statutory holidays

Article 112 of the Labour Code (Law No. 45/2019/QH14) gives employees 11 paid public holidays a year: 1 day for the Western New Year on 1 January, 5 days for Tet, 1 day for the Hung Kings Commemoration on the 10th day of the third lunar month, 1 day for Reunification Day on 30 April, 1 day for International Labour Day on 1 May, and 2 days for National Day on 2 September plus one day immediately before or after it. Foreign employees working in Vietnam get one extra day off for their own country's traditional New Year and one for their own national day. The Prime Minister decides the exact Tet and National Day days each year.

A 12th holiday is proposed, not yet law

A draft law amending the Labour Code would add 24 November, Vietnam Culture Day, as a 12th paid holiday and move the yearly announcement to the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Minister of Home Affairs presented the bill to the National Assembly on 21 October 2026, at the second session of the 16th National Assembly; as of 22 October 2026 it has not been voted on, so the statutory number is still 11 days. Public officials were given 24 November 2026 off, but that is a decision for the public sector, not a change to the Labour Code.

Tet 2027: 4 to 10 February for public offices

The first day of the Year of the Goat falls on Saturday 6 February 2027. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced in October 2026 that public officials and civil servants get seven days in a row, from Thursday 4 February to Wednesday 10 February 2027: the five statutory Tet days plus two days moved around the weekend. Hai Phong's city government issued its own notice following the same schedule. Private employers choose their own five Tet days from the options the government sets and must tell staff at least 30 days in advance, so your landlord, your school or your favourite cafe may close on slightly different days.

National Day 2027

The same announcement gives public offices four days for National Day, from Thursday 2 September to Sunday 5 September 2027. Private employers give 2 September plus either 1 or 3 September.

Dates not announced yet

The government has not yet published the 2027 arrangements for the Hung Kings Commemoration, 30 April and 1 May. By our own lunar calendar calculation the Hung Kings day falls on Friday 16 April 2027; 30 April is a Friday and 1 May a Saturday, which is when a substitute day off is usually announced. Treat these as unconfirmed until the official notice appears.

Trains, flights and offices around Tet

Vietnam Railways opened Tet 2027 ticket sales on 5 September 2026. Its Tet travel period runs from 23 January to 25 February 2027, and it plans extra trains on 5 to 8 February 2027, mainly on southern routes and Hanoi to Vinh; its notice does not mention the Hanoi to Hai Phong line, so check that line on the official booking site before you travel. We could not find an official notice from the civil aviation authority on Tet flights. Government offices, including immigration offices, follow the public holiday schedule, so do not plan a visa extension or temporary residence paperwork for that week. We found no official central bank notice on bank closures; in past years banks have closed in line with the national Tet schedule, so get cash and finish transfers before 4 February.

Frequently asked questions

When is Tet 2027?

The first day of the Lunar New Year is Saturday 6 February 2027. Public offices are closed from Thursday 4 February to Wednesday 10 February 2027.

How many public holidays does Vietnam have?

The Labour Code sets 11 paid public holidays. A bill adding 24 November as a 12th day went to the National Assembly on 21 October 2026 and had not been voted on as of 22 October 2026.

Do private companies follow the same Tet dates?

Not always. Private employers pick their five Tet days from government options and must announce them at least 30 days ahead.

Can I do visa or residence paperwork during Tet?

Plan not to. Government offices, including immigration, follow the public holiday schedule and are closed during the Tet break.
